The Big Blues played their final game of the USCAA Small College World Series against Cleary University. This game was great for fans who love a lot of runs as both teams offenses put on a show. However, on the last play of the game a controversial bang-bang play at the plate gave the Cougars a walk off 10-9 victory over the Big Blues.
The Bluefield State College Big Blues celebrated their return to postseason baseball with a 10-4 win over Central Penn College in the opening game of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series at East Field Park early Monday morning.
The Big Blues went on the road as they wind down their 2017 season against Salem International. The Big Blues were in both games but had 1 bad inning in each game which cost them. Final scores for the double header were 5-3 and 10-4.
The Big Blues traveled to the Virginia Coast this weekend for what was originally a 4 game set against The Apprentice School. Due to some inclement weather projected, the series was limited to 2 games, with the Builders taking both, 5-2 and 2-1.
Games 1 & 2 were played in Mt. Airy, NC and ended 10-1 and 4-3; with Bluefield State winning game 2. Games 3 and 4, which were played in Princeton, WV ended 10-18 and 7-3 with Bluefield State taking the 4th game of the series.
The Big Blues went on the road to start their 4 game series against the Winston-Salem State Rams. The Big Blues fell 4-2 and 15-1 in 7 inning double headers. The final 2 games of the 4 game series were held in Princeton, WV. But playing at home did not help Bluefield State as they fell 11-3 and 6-1.
The Big Blues finally had a home game this season and took on NCAA DIII Guilford College at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, WV. The Big Blues have not fared so well against the Quakers and tonight was no different as BSC fell 15-3.
The Big Blues had another 4 game series this weekend, this time against Saint Augustine’s. Just like the series against Virginia State, the Big Blues split with the Falcons, losing the two games Saturday (4-0, 2-1) and winning the games Sunday (10-4, 9-5).
If you liked offense, this was your series. 75 runs were scored in these 4 games, as the teams split the weekend series, each winning two games. Each game was close throughout as three games were decided by 2 runs and 1 game was decided by 3 runs.
Bluefield State went on the road to Columbia, SC to face HBCU foe Benedict in a two 7-inning games Saturday. Both of these games were high scoring for the second weekend in a row. However BSC had some unlucky breaks and fell 11-5 in game 1 and 8-7 in game two.
Baseball opened up its 2017 season this weekend with a sweep of Voorhees College. Each of two games took a different tone and they show a good outlook for the coming season. In game 1, the Big Blues scored 11 runs and defeated Voorhees 11-4. Game 2 saw the defense come alive as BSC won 4-3.
