Cary, NC- The Big Blues had another 4 game series this weekend, this time against Saint Augustine's. Just like the series against Virginia State, the Big Blues split with the Falcons, losing the two games Saturday (4-0, 2-1) and winning the games Sunday (10-4, 9-5).
Pitching was the story of the 1st day with the Big Blues only getting 3 hits in game 1. The Falcon's Amicar Yanez pitched a complete game, striking out 3, and only walking 2. Chase Chambers, Sam Harris and Cole Blocker were the only 3 batters to get a hit off Yanez as he was very efficient in the game. Bo Williams took the mound to start the game for Bluefield State. After rattling off a couple wins in a row, the Falcons were able to get to him a little as he gave up 4 runs on 9 hits. TJ Sauers came on in relief in the 6th inning. Sauers recorded the final out of the inning forcing the Falcons batter to pop up to 3rd base.
Game 2 was another great pitching duel between Brandon Wortkoetter and Rickey Rice. Wortkoetter pitched a complete game giving up 2 runs on 7 hits and striking out 3. Rice gave up 1 run on 8 hits and recorded 8 strike outs. Bluefield State actually had the 1-0 lead off a Cole Blocker RBI that scored Logan Wriston in the 4th. However, in the 5th the Falcons were able to score 2 and hold on for the victory.
The Big Blues' 3rd game saw their offense come back to life. BSC scored 10 runs, taking the lead in the 1st inning and never looking back. Bluefield State scored in all but the 4th and 7th innings. Peyton Durham got things started with a RBI in the 1st. Drew D'Angelo, who leads the team in batting average, had a two RBI double to finish the inning. Justin Bowler also had a 2 RBI single in the 3rd when he scored Billy O'Hara and Cole Blocker. Chase Chambers was able to tack on a few more runs at the end of the game with a single, scoring Chaz Rutherford and Justin Bowler. All of these runs gave Tanner Muovich a very comfortable lead for the game. Muovich picked up his second win of the season, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits and also recorded 4 strikeouts on the afternoon.
Addison Meeks was on the bump for the series finale. Meeks went 6 innings giving up 4 runs on 7 hits but recorded the win for his 3rd of the season. Brandon Chandler was able to come on in the final inning to secure the victory for Bluefield State. Offensively, the Big Blues had another strong performance. Kevon Moxey had himself a game, going 2-4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Moxey also scored 3 times and so accounted for 7 of Bluefield State's 9 runs.
The Big Blues final come home for the 1st time this season with a midweek contest versus Guilford. This will be a rematch from earlier in the season in which Guilford won 9-1. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 pm at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, WV on the campus of Princeton High School.
