Defensive Woes Hurt Blues

Princeton, WV- The Big Blues finally had a home game this season and took on NCAA DIII Guilford College at Hunnicutt Field in Princeton, WV. The Big Blues have not fared so well against the Quakers and tonight was no different as BSC fell 15-3.

The game started off well for Bluefield State and was tied after 3 innings. But in the 4th, the wheels came off the bus defensively and Guilford took advantage, scoring 6 runs and blowing the game wide open. Then in the 6th, the Big Blues couldn't stop the bleeding if you will, and Guilford scored 5 more to go up 15-3.

Freshman Brandon Wortkoetter took the bump for the game and had a solid outing. Wortkoetter went 3.1 innings giving up 8 runs on 2 hits. But of those 8 runs, only 2 of them were earned. The defense committed 3 of their 5 errors in the 4th inning to really hurt the Big Blues. Coach Hunter turned to a few different pitchers to finish out the game. Tanner Hill came on in relief to pitch for the 1st time in his collegiate career. Hill pitched a full inning only giving up 1 hit and record his 1st career strikeout.

Offensively Drew D'Angelo went 2 for 4 and scored a run. Peyton Durham, Logan Wriston and Bubba Smith all recorded an RBI for the game.

The Big Blues now have a 4 game series against Lincoln (PA) from the CIAA. This game will be played at a neutral site so be sure and check back online for updates to the scores.
