Charlotte, NC- The Big Blues go 0-2 in the JCSU Classic hosted by Johnson C. Smith University. Bluefield State played the host's Friday night and were in the game early but faded toward the end, losing 85-58. Saturday saw the Big Blues face off against Livingstone and the Blues lost 87-65.
Bluefield State came out early and really provided a tough game for the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith. Offensively BSC was led Marcus Richardson who played 35 minutes and scored 18 points. Richardson was also 5-5 from the charity stripe and had 4 assists on the night. Julian Hernandez was also had another double-digit performance, following up his game at Bluefield College. Hernandez came off the bench again and scored 13 for the Blues. But the environment of playing a "primetime" Friday night game on the road really got to the Big Blues as they could not generate enough stops to make a last minute push for the lead. The Golden Bulls shot 49% from the field 55% from 3. Bluefield State as a team was only able to shoot 37% from the field and 26% from downtown.
Game 2 for the Big Blues saw the team face off against Livingstone College. Once again this Senior led Big Blues squad gave the Blue Bears all they could handle, but could not string together stops when it counted and ended up losing 87-65. Bluefield State almost had identical numbers shooting as game 1, shooting 38% from the field and 28% from downtown. Josh Windham who had 15 points with 4 rebounds and 4 assists led scoring for BSC. Marcus Richardson, Greg Purnell and Jamal McCoy also had double-digit scoring for the Big Blues but even with all the different scorers, the team could not get stops against Livingstone College. The Blue Bears shot 58% from the field and 48% from 3. Livingstone's bench was also a big lift for the team as they were able to score 37 from members on their bench and the Big Blues could only get 9 points from their reserves.
The Big Blues will look to bounce back and pick up their 1st win this season on the road against Virginia State University on Tuesday. Tip off for that game is scheduled to be at 7:00. BSC will then go on the road to Florida to play in a tournament hosted by Florida Tech before returning home to play Concord University on Monday the 28th.
