Bluefield, WV- The Big Blues were back in action again today against Mercer County Rival Concord University. This was a quick turnaround for the team as they just finished a tournament in Florida on Saturday. Even with the lack of rest Bluefield State fought admiralty but ended up losing 71-59.
Bluefield State came out early and built a 5-point lead over the Mountain Lions. The line-up of all seniors as starters has worked out well for Coach Price and really gives defenses fits with all the ball movement. The team ended up with 11 assists, led by Marcus Richardson who had 4. Offensively BSC had their moments and brought the game to 10 points a few times in the second half but missed some key opportunities to cut into Concord's lead. James Day was the leading scorer for the Big Blues with 18. Day went 7-14 and connected on 4 of his 8 free-throw opportunities. Joshua Windham was also a double digit scorer for the Big Blues, ending the day with 13 total points. Overall the team went 24-64 (38%) and were abysmal from downtown only going 4-21 (19%).
Concord was led by Aaron Miller who led the team with 16 points. The Mountain Lions were also dominant on the boards and out rebounded Bluefield State 47-32. Stephen Thompson led the charge for Concord collecting 10 of those rebounds. Thompson was two points away from securing a double-double for the game.
The Big Blues will be at home again on Saturday to take on Malone University. Tip for the men's game will be at 4:00 pm. Saturday is a double header with the women playing after the men. Tickets will still be $5.00 and get you into both games.
