Bluefield, WV- The Big Blues lose to start December in heartbreaking fashion to Malone University. Credit is due to the Pioneers who never gave in after being down by double digits early. Bluefield State led almost the entire game until the final 5 minutes when Malone came back from behind and squeezed out a 3-point victory, 70-67.
Bluefield State came out early and were making their shots. The team really took it to the Pioneers and at one point in the 1st half had a 19-point lead. In the 1st half BSC shot 50% from the field, and 53% from behind the arch. The perimeter defense of the Big Blues was also stellar, only allowing Malone to make 3 of their 12 1st half three point attempts. Joshua Windham had a fantastic game, scoring 23points, 18 of those coming in the 1st half. Marcus Richardson was also impressive offensively, scoring 12 points and providing 7 assists.
But a relatively poor 2nd half shooting performance helped Malone climb back into the game. BSC only shot 38% from the field in the half which brought their overall game shooting percentage down to 44%. Malone was also able to get to the line 23 times. While they only made 12 of their free throws, Bluefield State was only able to get to the line 5 times (and they made all 5 attempts) and so the Pioneers slowly were able to get back into the game. Ty Jordan from Malone was the leading scorer for the Pioneers with 23.
The Big Blues will look to recover this weekend as they play in the Manchin Classic hosted by Salem International.
