Salem, WV- Men's basketball drops both in Manchin Classic hosted by Salem International this weekend. This was a very tough tournament for the men as they played a solid University of Charleston squad and then turned right around and played West Virginia State. The men lost to Charleston 81-61 and then lost to West Virginia State 82-72.
The University of Charleston was highlighted by three Big Blues in figures. Marcus Richardson and Julian Hernandez both shot the ball well, each scoring 14 points. Richardson was also able to tally 3 steals in the game. But scoring for the Big Blues came from Joshua Windham who led all scorers with 22 points. Windham was also able to get 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks in 37 minutes played. But even with the seniors having an impressive scoring night, they could not stop the inside presence of the University of Charleston. Charleston had 52 points in the pain and were shooting 51% from the field. That on top a 4-6 3-point shooting night as a team help Charleston build the 20-point difference in the game.
Game 2 was much closer and saw 7 lead changes and 7 ties throughout the game. Bluefield State performed admirably and was in the hunt to pull out the victory toward the end. Once again 3 Big Blues were in double figures on the offensive side. Greg Prunell had 10 points in 35 minutes of action. James Day also played much better than his Friday performance against Charleston and scored 12 points, going 6-7 from the field. But once against Josh Windham led all scorers with 29 points, which is a season high for Windham. The Big Blues actually outshot the Yellow Jackets, with BSC shooting 52% to WV State's 47%. The "Achilles' Heel" for BSC was that WV State was able to get to the Free Throw line. The Yellow Jackets made 14 of their 18 attempts while Bluefield State only made it to the line 5 times, converting 3 of those attempts.
The Big Blues will be at Home on Friday December 16th at 3:00 pm to take on West Virginia Wesleyan. This is an early tip for the men as the Herb Sims Classic will follow the men's game.
