Bluefield, WV- The Big Blues hosted their 2nd to last home game of the 2016-2017 season against fellow NCAA Independent Salem International. This game was a back and forth affair with the Big Blues holding on to a 72-69 victory!
These teams were very evenly matched as neither team could get out to a lead of more than 5 points. There were 10 lead changes and 6 ties in the 40 minutes of action. Dominique Robinson who came off the bench and scored 21 points led Salem International. He also added 7 rebounds and was on his way to a double-double when he fouled out with 3 minutes left in the game. As a team the Tigers shot the ball very well, going 27-47 (57.4%) from the floor. But turnovers killed them as they had 16 for the game.
BSC was able to capitalize on these 16 turnovers, scoring 22 off those turnovers. Julian Hernandez led the way for Bluefield State scoring 23 points. Most of Hernandez's points came in the 1st half but he made 2 clutch free throws with 9 seconds left in the game to put BSC up by 3. The Big Blues were slow to start the 2nd half and the Tigers took advantage, building their 5 point lead. But Marcus Richardson was able to gain that momentum back by hitting a major 3 to turn the tides. Richardson ended the game with 19 points and was the major offensive weapon in the 2nd half.
