Bluefield, VA- The Big Blues Golf Team opened up their season this weekend with a solid victory in the Two Virginia's Cup. The entire team had an excellent two rounds of golf at Fincastle On the Mountain, shooting a 630 overall (315 in each round).
After round 1 Bluefield State had a sizable lead over Bluefield College and Concord. Bluefield State posted a 315 with Bluefield College 12 strokes behind shooting a 327. Blake Hash of Bluefield State actually shot the best score of all the players with a 73. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw during round 2 so other Bluefield State players had to step up to fill that gap. Karson Terry came through in the clutch shooting an impressive 75 in round 2 after an 83 round 1 to help seal the victory for the Big Blues. JT Lester and Justin Mariotti also provided a security blanket for the team as JT shot a 79 in both rounds and Justin shot an 80 in both of his rounds. The performances by the entire team helped fend off a furious Bluefield College push in round 2 as the eventual Tournament Individual Winner Zach Luttrell shot a 72 to end with a final score of 147. But the 12 shot lead was too much to overcome for the Rams and the Big Blues won the tournament by 9 strokes shooting at 630.
The 2 individuals that Bluefield State put out also had an incredible performance for the 2 rounds. Kirk Collins and Caleb Cox ended in 2nd and 3rd for the overall individual tournament. Kirk ended up shooting a 151 (74-77) for the 2 rounds in an incredible showing. Not to be out down by Bluefield State's only freshman, Caleb Cox, who shot a 153 (74-79) over all in the tournament.
The Big Blues are back in action on Monday and Tuesday as they play in the Walley Edgell West Virginia Collegiate Championship in Grafton, West Virginia at the Tygart Lake Golf Course. Check back for updates during their rounds!
