Charleston, WV- The 41st Tennis team in NCAA Division II opened up their bid for a 6th straight Atlantic Region Title against regional opponents West Virginia State and the University of Charleston. The Big Blues already looked in mid-season form with a 9-0 win over the Yellow Jackets and an 8-1 victory over the Golden Eagles
Coach Belt reorganized his lineup from the exhibition contest against Liberty a few weeks ago, putting Platon Gud and Luca Ockernahl at #1 doubles. Anthony Braem and Alexandr Rudenco played #2 doubles and Giorgi Datashvili and Ignacio Pulido played the 3's for both matches this afternoon.
Against West Virignia State, Bluefield State dominated from the begining. Everyone won their matches in straight sets, with no one allowing their opponent to win more than two games in a set.
Against Charleston, Bluefield State was able to come out of the double competition with a 3-0 over all lead, really making a comeback hard for the Golden Eagles. Anthony Braem and Alexandr Rudenco had the closest double match of the day edging a victory 8-6.
The singles matches were also very competitive with 4 of the 6 singles matches going into decisive set 3's. The match of the day perhaps goes to Giorgi Datashvili who had a very hard fought match against Charleston's Jamie Gibson. Gibson won the 1st set 6-3 but Datashvili was able to come back in set 2 and win 6-3. But set 3 was a back and forth affair between these two very evenly matched players. Datashvili ended up winning 10-8 to secure the point for Bluefield State.
The men are back in action Sunday against another regional opponent in Shepherd University. While this is a home match for BSC, it will be played in Blacksburg on the campus of Virginia Tech. Check back for all the updates.
