Blacksburg, Va.- The Bluefield State Cross Country teams started their season at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, VA on Friday, Sept. 4th.
The Women's meet was supposed to start at 6pm, but was pushed back to 6:30 pm due to lightning and storms in the area.
The Lady Blues did well for their first meet of the season, especially running against a heavily loaded Division I field. They finished 3rd in their Division II field behind Concord University and the University of Charleston.
Senior Amanda Nichols finished first for the Lady Blues with a time of 17:05.5. Newcomer to the cross country team, but fifth year senior as a student-athlete, Ariel Paige, did great for her first career meet. She finished second for the team with a time of 18:34.3. Senior Kristy French was right behind her with a time of 18:45.7
Sophomore Shonte Cargill finished fourth for the team with a time of 20:07.2. And newcomer's Kelsey Fry and Kristen Clay finished with times of 23:13.0 and 23:43.0.
The Men's meet started right after the Women's meet, but was not finished and cancelled while all runners were still on course due to lightning in the area.
The Cross Country Team's next meet will be on Sept. 19th at the Roanoke Invitational in Roanoke, Va.
