Carey, NC- Bluefield State Softball was back in action this weekend in the Shaw Bear Challenge, playing 5 games in 3 days. The Big Blues are still trying to work through so early season jitters and fell in each game of the weekend.
Game 1 saw Bluefield State face off against Lenoir-Rhyne and the ladies ran into the best pitching they have seen all season. Lenior-Rhyne's Sydney Miller pitched a complete game no-hitter against Bluefield State. Miller's performance was spectacular, striking out 10 batters and only giving up 1 walk to break her perfect game.
Bluefield State also did not do themselves any favors defensively, giving up 9 errors in 5 innings of play. The strong pitching performance plus the lack of defense by BSC contributed to a 19-0 defeat in Game 1.
Game 2 saw Bluefield State take on Clarion. Clarion jumped out big early, and held on for a 17-0 victory. Bluefield State was able to clean things up defensively, drastically reducing the errors in this game. The Hatfield twins were able to get the team's only two hits in the game. Lauryn Hatfield singled in the second and Lyndsay Hatfield doubled in the game.
Game 3 was the closest contest of the weekend for Bluefield State and was the 1st time the team played 7 innings all season. The Big Blues jumped out to a lead early against Lincoln (PA) and lead 5-2 after two innings. Ashley Rasnake started things off in the 1st inning with a single to left field. Emily Day had an infield single to load the bases. This got the pitcher a little nervous and the Big Blues were able to score two on passed balls. Casey Spencer grounded out to the pitcher but in the process batted in Emily Day. Lyndsay Hatfield scored on another passed ball to give the Big Blues 4 runs in the 1st inning. Ashley Rasnake also scored in the second from another infield hit by Emily Day. Tanasia Blake also recorded her 1st collegiate hit in the game in the 3rd inning.
But, the Big Blues had too many miscues in the game to hold their lead. Emily Day was in the circle for BSC but received very little help from her defense. Pass balls and six errors contributed to 10 runs on the afternoon.
Bluefield State took on Millersville in game 4 and fell 13-1. Emily day scored the lone run for the Big Blues off a wild pitch in the 4th inning. Emily Day started the game pitching for BSC and was relieved by Ashley Rasnake in the 5th inning.
Elizabeth City State was BSC's next opponent but the results were like much of the weekend. Elizabeth City ended up winning 19-0 in 5 innings finishing the tough weekend for the Big Blues.
The Big Blues will now do a swing road trip against Lincoln Memorial on the 8th and then play Carson-Newman on the 9th in a makeup game from last week. Check back for links and updates to the games!
