Charlotte, NC- The Ladies of Bluefield State took the three hour trip to Charlotte, NC for a double header against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith. The Big Blues offense started to show signs of life this weekend after being shut out in the middle of the week. Unfortunately the Big Blues could not keep pace with the Bulls, falling 14-4 and 18-4.
Game 1 saw Emily Day take to the center circle for the 9th time this season. Day started slow, missing her spots early. But in the 2nd and 3rd innings she settled in and only gave up 1 run in those innings. For the game she gave up 14 runs on 15 hits, 12 of those runs earned.
The Big Blues offense came alive in the 4th and 5th inning scoring two runs in each. In the 4th, Casey Spencer grounded out to 1st base but was able to drive in Emily Day for an RBI. One batter later, Lauryn Hatfield struck out swinging but the catcher could not hold on to the ball so Lauryn Hatfield reached 1st safely. At the same time, Lyndsay Hatfield scored off the passed ball.
In the next inning Shonte Cargill started things off by singling. Then before the next pitch was thrown, Cargill caught the Bulls napping and stole second. Then Emily Day came to the plate came to the plate and absolutely belted one to left center field. Day's "dinger" cleared the fence for the second home run of her career, 1st of the 2017 season.
Coach Dillion turned to Emily Day again for game 2. Day had a solid 1st inning, just giving up 2 runs in the 1st. Midway through the second, Day started to labor a little and then Ashley Rasnake came on in relief. As a pair, the pitchers gave up 18 runs on 9 hits.
The Big Blues 1st 2 runs came in the 2nd inning and actually tied the game with the Golden Bulls briefly. Lyndsay Hatfield scored on an error by the center fielder. Then Tyann Thomas scored Casey Spencer on a single up the middle of the infield, Thomas's 1st career RBI. The next two runs came in the 4th inning off a crazy play. Lyndsay Hatfield started things off by doubling to right center. Casey Spencer then drove her in by crushing a ball to the right field fence. Spencer ended up scoring on the play on what she would consider an inside the park home run, but statistically will go down as a triple and an error as the 2nd baseman dropped the relay throw.
The Big Blues will go back to North Carolina for the week of BSC's Spring Break for a game against Winston-Salem State on Wednesday. The double header will begin at 1:00 with the second game coming after. Check back for updates on scores to these games.
