Bluefield, WV- Bluefield State hosted the Herb Sims Classic this weekend which pitted Glenville State and West Virginia State against your Big Blues Friday and Saturday. Offense was the name of the game in both of Bluefield State's contests and the ladies could not keep up, falling to Glenville State 98-45 and West Virginia State 92-55.
Glenville State's game plan was clear from the beginning, shoot three's when they are available. The Pioneers took 80 3's for the game and ending up shooting the ball 108 times. Bluefield State only took 57 total shots, 26 coming from behind the arc. While Glenville State's shooting percentage was only 33% (26% from 3) the sheer number of shots helped them build the lead they had throughout the game. Also Bluefield State struggled with turnovers, having 42 in game 1. Scoring for the Big Blues came from freshman Elizabeth Doughty. Doughty went 5-11 from the field, 2-6 from 3. She ended the day with 12 points, 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Her freshman counterpart Rosalie Pozo was second on the team with 10 points. Pozo went 3-12, 2-8 from 3. Pozo also added 2 more free throws to give her the 10 points. Tanasia Blake and Hannah O'Quinn also had solid rebounding games, each with 17 total rebounds. But the ladies could not keep up with the Pioneers and fell 98-45.
Game 2 was by far the best game the Big Blues have played all season. The ladies were able to put together multiple quarters of play to stay in the game until mid-way through the 3rd quarter. But much like the Glenville State game, Bluefield State could not match the sheer number of shots West Virginia State put up to stay close. The Yellow Jackets shot the ball 103 times, 79 from 3. BSC's offense was lead by Lyndsay Hatfield who went 5-15 from the field, 3-9 from 3 and scored 18 points. Hatfield also added 7 rebounds for the game. Chloe Layne also had a break out game. Layne went 5-12 and made 2 3's for 12 points. But with the 103 total shots the Yellow Jackets put up, Bluefield State ultimately fell 92-55.
The Herb Sims Classic also had 2 other games, The Apprentice School vs. West Virginia State and The Apprentice School vs. Glenville State. The Apprentice School won their game against West Virginia State by breaking the Yellow Jackets press and taking the ball to the hoop and score easy lay-ups. The Builders won this game 82-75. The Builders then turned around and played Glenville State. Like the Big Blues, The Apprentice School could not keep up winning, 98-71.
Your Big Blues will be off for a couple weeks due to the holidays but take on NAIA school Pikeville on January 2nd.
