The women's basketball team took the floor Wednesday night against the defending USCAA Division 2 National Champions, Johnson and Wales University, and walked away with a 56-49 victory. With the win, the Big Blues double their win total from a year ago and improve to 6-13 on the season with seven games still remaining.
The Big Blues started off slow and fell behind early 10-3 at the media timeout in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, the Big Blues were able to trim the lead to 15-12 behind five points from Jia Coppola off the bench.
Both teams struggled to start the second period as Johnson and Wales built their lead back up to 4, 20-16 at the media timeout of the second period. The Big Blues would finish the quarter on an 8-1 run, capped off with a 3 pointer from Holly Toler as the half came to a close with the home team now leading 24-21.
The lead at the half would never be relinquished as the Big Blues built their lead by eight points in the third before a late third quarter, early fourth quarter surge saw the visitors cut the lead to 42-41 with just over 8:00 remaining in the game.
However, a 12-0 run over the next five minutes saw the Big Blues build their largest lead of the game and they closed it out by working the clock and putting the finishing touch on when Kylah Webb made a lay-up assisted by Alexus Tucker to close out the scoring and give the final margin of victory.
Lyndsay Hatfield led the way for the Big Blues with an outstanding 13 points (tied for game high), 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Webb added 11 points and 5 rebounds in the winning effort. The Big Blues take the floor again this Saturday as the travel to Salem, WV to take on Salem University and will be home again next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. when they welcome Campbellsville-Harrodsburg.
