The Big Blues women's basketball team took the floor against USCAA opponent Stratford University (currently ranked #15 in the latest USCAA Div. I coaches poll) on Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game and walked away victors by the score of 100-34. It was a slow start for the Big Blues as it took them almost two and half minutes to get their first score, but as soon as they did, the scoring wouldn't stop.
By the time the first quarter came to an end, the home team had raced out to a 29-10 lead and would extend that lead to 61-17 at the half. The Big Blues shot a sizzling 52% from the floor in the first half, while knocking down 50% of their three point shots.
The Big Blues would cool off a little in the second half, but still finish the game shooting 46.5% from the floor, while holding the visitors to just 18.8%. It was also a big day on the glass for the Big Blues as they would pull down 28 offensive rebounds and out rebound the Cardinals 73-30.
Redshirt freshman, Jia Coppola flirted with a triple-double, but had to settle with her first double-double of the season with 15 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 assists. However she would have plenty of company as three other Big Blues would record double-doubles on the day. Freshman Kylah Webb would have 12 points and 15 rebounds; Junior Lauryn Hatfield would have 10 points and 13 rebounds; and her twin sister, senior Lyndsay Hatfield would finish with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Every Big Blue who took the floor would score at least 4 points today and other than the four players with double-doubles, three more Big Blues would score double figures. Jemiah Brittnum would add 13, Elizabeth Doughty 11, and Holly Toler 10.
The Big Blues will be back in action on Wednesday night, looking to win their fourth home game in a row, as they take on The Apprentice School from Newport News, VA. Scheduled tip is for 5:30 p.m.
