Three in a Row

Three in a Row
It was another slow start for the Lady Blues, but in the end, the result was the same as the last couple of games, a victory for the home team. Taking on The Apprentice School Builders (currently ranked #10 in the latest USCAA Poll), the Blues scored two quick baskets finding themselves up 4-0, but turnovers and poor shooting plagued them over the next seven minutes as the Builders went on an 11-0 run. Two lay-ups from Holly Toler sandwiched around one from Madison Wilcox would trim the lead to one by the end of the period with the visitors up 11-10.

Three free throws to start the second period, one from Wilcox and two from Jemiah Brittnum would put the home team up by two and they would never relinquish that lead. The Big Blues would build their lead to as many as nine in the second period, before a late run would see Apprentice cut the lead to four with a chance to get even closer before the half. However, the Big Blues would force a quick shot and with just over four seconds remaining in the half, Dani Janutolo would secure the rebound and let one fly and beat the buzzer from just inside half court to push the lead back to seven as the first half came to an end.

The two teams would play pretty even for the most of the third quarter with the Big Blues maintaing a five to nine point lead throughout. That was until about 2:14 remaining in the third when Toler would corral an offensive rebound and stick back; and add two free throws less than 30 seconds later to give the Big Blues their first double digit lead on the stick back and push the lead to 13 with the free throws. The two teams would trade baskets and a free throw from the Builders and a lay-up from Lauryn Hatfield as the third quarter came to an end that would net the home team a 14 point lead heading in to the final stanza.

The visitors would trim the lead to 10 to start the fourth quarter, but the home team would quickly build the lead back up, actually taking their largest lead of the game by 17. Stingy defense from the Big Blues would hold the Builders to just seven points over the last seven minutes of the ball game to take home the 64-50 victory.

Janutolo and Toler would pace the way for the Lady Blues with 13 each, while Lyndsay Hatfield nearly missed a double-double for the second straight game as she would finish with 9 points and a game high 9 rebounds.

The Big Blues will take to the floor again at home Saturday when Lees-McRae College comes to town. Sheduled tip is 2:00 p.m. with the men's team playing after versus The Aprrentice School.
