It wasn't the weekend the Big Blues had in mind for their Big Blue Classic, but after having Friday night's game canceled due to a water main break on campus, the Lady Blues were able to take to the court Saturday afternoon versus Cheyney University. In a back and forth battle between the two HBCU's, the Lady Blues would pull away in the final quarter and walk away with a 93-83 victory.
The Lady Blues would get off to a quick start hitting their first two 3-point shots to build a 6-0 lead. They would shoot a sizzling 62% from the floor in the first period while building a 22-13 lead. They would cool off in the second and the visitors would make a large surge to take the lead at halftime 42-40.
The second half would see the two teams trade basket for basket for the majority of the third period with neither team leading by more than 4 points. The last basket of the period would belong to the home team as the two teams would go into the final period knotted at 63-63.
In the final stanza, the Lady Blues would impose their will and race out to a 12-point lead in the first three minutes. From there, the Lady Blues would gradually build that lead to 18 before emptying the bench and they would win by the final margin of 10.
The Lady Blues were led by four double digit scorers; Kylah Webb's 19 points and six rebounds, Dani Janutolo's 16 points, Kara Sandy's 11 points, and Alexus Tucker's 10 points and 9 assists. Lauryn Hatfield had a game high 7 rebounds.
Next up for the Lady Blues will be a double header with the men's team on Tuesday night as they take on Concord University. Scheduled tip-off in the Ned E. Shott Physical Education building is set for 6:00 p.m.
