The temperature outside wasn't the only thing cold Tuesday night. Neither the Lady Blues or the visiting Lions of Penn State-Beaver could get their offenses going while they both shot just over 30% from the floor. The difference maker was defense and offensive rebounding that would help lead the home team to a hard fought 59-50 win.
The Lady Blues would jump out to a quick 6-1 lead before seeing the Lions fight back to take a one-point lead of their own 7-6. The lead would change a few more times in the first quarter before a made lay-up from Dani Janutolo would see the Lady Blues go up 10-9, a lead that they would hold onto the rest of the night. Five made free throws, four from Haley McComas, would finish out the scoring for the first quarter and see the lead grow to 15-9.
The second period would start much like the most of the first with the two teams trading baskets and missed shots, until a small 5-0 run in just over a half a minute would see the Lady Blues build their first double digit lead. The visitors wouldn't go quietly though as they cut the lead to seven with sixteen ticks left on the clock before the half. However, a deep three-pointer from Autumn Spangler would get the lead back to ten and see the home team head into the locker room with a 30-20 lead.
A quick 7-0 run to start the second half would see the Lady Blues build their biggest lead of the night at seventeen, 37-20. It would take the visitors the entre third period to cut the lead back down to ten (46-36), but once again the home team had some end of the quarter magic to build the lead back to 13 at the third period buzzer. After a made free throw with just 3 seconds left in the period, Lauryn Hatfield would inbound the ball to Janutolo who took a few dribbles and from just inside half court left a deep three go that found nothing but the bottom of the net to secure the 49-36 lead.
The final stanza saw the lead stay around the 10-12 point range with just around six minutes remaining. However, the Lady Blues wouldn't score another field goal for almost six minutes. Their lead would only slip to as low as seven as they would hold the visitors without a field goal for the last 4:43 of the game and a lay-up from Hatfield in the waning seconds would secure the nine-point victory.
Janutolo would lead the way on the night with 16 points, while Kylah Webb would add 10. Hatfield would pull down a game high 12 rebounds, Webb would add 8, and McComas would hand out 5 assists to lead the Lady Blues.
Next up for the Lady Blues will be Salem University on Saturday, January, 25 at 2:00 p.m. This will be part of a double-header with the men's program as they are slated for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
