Coming into their Monday night contest, the Bluefield State Lady Blues where looking for their fourth straight win. Early on it looked like they would walk away with an easy victory, but the hot shooting from visiting Alderson Broaddus would make it a hard fought game. In the end, it would be a pair of made free throws from Dani Janutolo with 5.9 seconds left on the clock that would make the final difference in a 71-69 victory for the Lady Blues.
Alderson Broaddus would start the scoring with a quick three-pointer, but the Lady Blues would then go on a 13-0 run to open up a ten point lead at the 6:28 mark in the first quarter. Both teams would go scoreless for the next four minutes and the Lady Blues would finish the quarter with a 19-11 lead. It would be a balanced attack as every starter for the Lady Blues would get into the scoring column.
The second period would show some more of that balanced attack and Lady Blues would build their at the half to fifteen, 36-21. Janutolo would lead the way in the first half with 8 points, while Ameera McClain would add 6. The third period would see the start of the Battlers heating up and although they would only gain two points, the stage was set for a sizzling fourth quarter. Kylah Webb would get going in the third for the Lady Blues scoring seven points in the quarter helping maintain that lead at 13, 54-41.
The fourth quarter would see an offensive display from the Battlers as they would shoot almost 70% in the quarter and make four three-pointers on their way to tying the game up 69-69 with 16 seconds left on the clock. The Lady Blues balanced attack kept the visitors at bay until the last minute with shooting 60% from the floor themselves. When the visitors tied the ball game up with those 16 clicks left on a deep contested three-pointer, the Lady Blues kept their poise. After a called timeout, Lauryn Hatfield found Janutolo on a back door cut where she was fouled attempting a lay-up. Janutolo went to the line and calmly sank both free throws. A last second shot attempt from the visitors would be off the mark and the Lady Blues would walk away with their fourth staright win.
Janutolo and Webb would both lead the Lady Blues with 18 points and 8 rebounds each. McClain would add 9 point and 4 assists, while Alexus Tucker would dish out 6 of the 20 assists for the Lady Blues.
The Lady Blues will go for five in a row on Saturday when they travel to Vienna, WV to take on Ohio Valley University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
