Big Second Half Leads Lady Blues To Fifth Straight

Big Second Half Leads Lady Blues To Fifth Straight

The Lady Blues traveled to Vienna, WV on Saturday afternoon taking on Ohio Valley University looking for their fifth straight win. After a hot start from the home team and a cold shooting first half, things looked bleak for the Lady Blues to continue their win streak. However, as Coach Bailey told the ladies in the locker room at the half, this is the reason they make the game 40 minutes. The second half would see the Lady Blues would erease a 17 point lead by playing some stifling defense and shooting over 50% over the final two periods to pull out the 64-53 victory.

Neither team would get things going in the first five minutes as Ohio Valleywould take a slim 8-6 lead heading into the first media timeout. Those 6 points would be all the Lady Blues would score for the quarter until the final seconds when Jia Coppola put in lay-up at the buzzer. She was fouled in the process and would go to the free throw line and sink her free throw to see the Lady Blues down 18-9 at the end of the first.

The home team would start the second quarter hitting five of their first six shots building their lead to 30-15 at the media timeout of the second. The Lady Blues would continue to struggle from the floor and over the next five minutes the teams would trade baskets and see the home to take a 36-21 halftime lead.

Ohio Valley would take their lead to 17 on a quick basket to start the second half and it looked as the struggles were going to continue for the Lady Blues as they didn't score in the first two minutes to start the half. Two made free throws from Kylah Webb would finally get the motor started for the visitors and five and a hlf minutes would see the Lady Blues go on a 21-0 run to storm back and take the lead by 4. By the time the third period came to an end, the Lady Blues would lead 47-40. The Lady Blues would force 10 turnovers during the quarter, while Coppola would lead the charge scoring 8 points and Dani Janutolo would add 7.

Just a minute in a half into the fourth quarter, the home team would cut the lead to just 2, but the Lady Blues would never break and score two quick baskets to take the lead back up to 6. A three pointer from Ohio Valley with 4:07 left to go would later cut the lead to 4 once again, but that would be the last basket the Lady Blues would yield as the score the final 7 points of the game to secure an 11 point victory and their fifith straight.

Janutolo would lead the way with a double-double of 13 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 steals, while Coppola would have a fine afternoon with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Webb would also add 13 points and Ameera McClain would also reach double digits with 10.

Next up for the Lady Blues will be Monday night when they travel to Mercer County rival, Concord University as part of a double header with the men's program. Tip-off for the women is slated for 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow.
